SHAREWARE
Windows Gourmet is distributed as shareware. Shareware is not a type of
software, rather it is a method of marketing. Shareware allows you to
evaluate a software package BEFORE you decide whether or not you want to
spend your hard-earned dollars on it. In the case of Windows Gourmet you
are entitled to a 30-day evaluation period. During this time you may use
Windows Gourmet, unrestricted, to determine whether it suits your needs.
If you are satisfied with the software and wish to continue using it
beyond this 30-day period, you must register. After you have registered
you will be provided with the current registered version of Windows
Gourmet. This version is essentially the same as the evaluation version,
with a few registration "reminders" removed. It is illegal (and not very
nice) to continue using the software without registering it. Registration
provides you with other benefits such as printed documentation and
discounts on upgrades. It also facilitates the future development of
Windows Gourmet. Registration information, as well as an order form,
follow on the next couple pages.

Windows Gourmet 1.1 1
INTRODUCTION
Windows Gourmet is an easy to use database designed to catalog
recipes and plan meals. It can categorize and save hundreds of recipes,
displaying them in a natural "recipe card"-like fashion on your screen.
You may print out recipes or simply use your screen as a reference as you
prepare them. You can easily adjust the size of the display so you can
see the recipe on your computer screen from across the kitchen.
Windows Gourmet also has a powerful Meal function which allows you
to put together a family dinner or a brunch with friends. You may select
several recipes, adjust their servings for the number of people you'll be
having, and print out a shopping list of everything you'll need to
prepare the meal. You can turn a recipe for a 2-person soup into a 40-
serving feast, or reduce 12 servings worth of cookies to a manageable
dozen.
The interface is simple enough that an experienced computer user
should be able to get around with little or no extra information. For
those not quite so confident, this guide will take you step-by-step
through creating your own recipes and meals. As the guide progresses you
will get into more advanced feature such as preparing a Meal, adjusting
servings, and creating a shopping list.
On-Line help is available from almost anywhere within the program,
so you may not need this manual. You can get a listing of all of the help
topics by choosing Contents from the Help menu.
I have put a lot of work into Windows Gourmet and I hope you enjoy
it. And please, if it is something you would like to keep, please
register. I'm also always looking for ways to improve Windows Gourmet so
please give me any suggestions for enhancements that you may come up
with.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To successfully use Windows Gourmet, you must have at least the
following system configuration:
IBM 386 or compatible computer
Microsoft Windows 3.1
Hard drive with 1 megabyte of free space
Windows Gourmet 1.1 2
FINDING RECIPES
Before you begin entering your own recipes, you'll probably want to
look around a bit and learn how Windows Gourmet functions with the
recipes included. Windows Gourmet comes with a number of recipes already
entered.
To locate a recipe in the Windows Gourmet cookbook, select Find
Recipe from the Recipe menu or press Ctrl+F. This option will take you
into the "Find Recipe" dialog box. To locate a recipe, select the
category to which it belongs from the Category box at the top. You may
also obtain an alphabetical listing of all of the recipes by selecting
All in the Category box.
Once you have located the recipe that you wish to display, highlight
that recipe with your mouse and click OK. You may also double-click on a
recipe to select it. If you wish to leave the Find Recipe dialog box
without selecting a recipe, click on CANCEL.
If you currently have a recipe displayed on the screen, you can
quickly browse through the other recipes using the "Next Recipe" and
"Previous Recipe" options under the Recipe menu. You may also use your
left and right arrow keys for the same purpose.
PRINTING RECIPES
If you wish to print out a recipe, you must first select the recipe
as described under FINDING RECIPES. Then, simply select Print from the
File menu or Ctrl+P to print the recipe out on your default printer.
PREFERENCES
Selecting Preferences from the File menu brings up the Preferences
dialog box. In here you may set the default servings for new recipes and
meals. You may also set the default category for all new recipes.
Windows Gourmet 1.1 3
CREATING RECIPES
To enter a new recipe for the Windows Gourmet cookbook, select New
Recipe from the Recipe menu or press Ctrl+N. The Edit Recipe dialog box
should then appear. Fill in this box with all of the appropriate
information as described below:
Field Description
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name This is just the name of your recipe, "Uncle Joe's Chili,"
for example.
Source This describes where this recipe is from, "Church Picnic,"
is a good example.
Category This determines what category of recipe you are creating.
It is used mainly in the Find Recipe dialog box to sort
your recipes. If you click on this box, you will be
presented with a list of all available categories. To
change the default category, see PREFERENCES.
Servings Put here the number of people that this recipe, as it's
described, will serve. This value will become important
when you use the meal function later to adjust the
ingredient portions for your recipe.
Ingredients Here will be listed all of the ingredients included in
your recipe. Use the Add, Edit and Delete buttons here.
See EDITING INGREDIENTS for more detailed information.
Directions In this box, you may enter the directions for preparing
the recipe.
After everything has been filled in, click OK to save the recipe to
the Windows Gourmet cookbook. If you change your mind about creating this
new recipe, click CANCEL and the recipe will be discarded.
EDITING RECIPES
To edit a recipe that's already created, you must first select it
through the Find Recipe option on the Recipe menu. Then, with the recipe
displayed on your screen, select Edit Recipe from the Recipe menu or
press Ctrl+E. You will be taken to the Edit Recipe dialog. This functions
the same as described under CREATING RECIPES except all of the boxes will
be filled in with the current recipe's settings. You may make any chances
you want and click OK to save your changes, CANCEL to abort them.
Windows Gourmet 1.1 4
EDITING INGREDIENTS
To edit ingredients, you must be in the Edit Recipe dialog box. For
information on getting to the Edit Recipe dialog box see CREATING RECIPES
or EDITING RECIPES.
The are three options for editing your ingredient list:
The ADD button brings up the Edit Ingredient dialog box and allows
you to enter information for a new ingredient.
The EDIT button will bring up the Edit Ingredient dialog box with
the information for the currently highlighted ingredient. You may
also edit an ingredient by double-clicking on the ingredient.
The DELETE button will remove the currently highlighted ingredient
from the ingredient list.
The Edit Ingredient dialog box contains the following fields:
Field Description
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quantity This is the quantity of the ingredient you are currently
editing. You may enter any integer or fractions in the
form "x/y." Some sample quantities are 1, 2 1/4, 2/3, and
5 3/4. You may leave the quantity box blank if it does not
apply (for instance, "pepper to taste" would not require a
quantity.)
Unit Here, you would enter the unit of measure that is
appropriate for your ingredient. If you click your mouse
on the button next to this box for a list of predefined
units. You may also type a unit into this box if the one
you want is not in the list.
Item This is the ingredient itself.
As with other dialog boxes, you may click OK to save your changes, CANCEL
to abort them.

CREATING A MEAL
Before we get in to how to create a Meal, a quick definition is in
order. A Meal, as Windows Gourmet sees it, is a collection of recipes.
There is nothing special about these recipes except that they have been
assigned to the meal. The capabilities of the meal come into play with
its ability to convert the recipes you select to all reflect the same
number of servings that you have specified for the meal.
MEAL SERVINGS
To set the number of servings for the meal, select Servings from the
Meal menu. In the Meal Servings dialog box you may tell Windows Gourmet
how many people the meal will be servings. The default is for the Meal to
make no adjustment to the servings of each recipe. If you wish to make
all of the selected recipes reflect one number of servings, you must un-
check the box labeled "Use Individual Recipe Servings." Then in the box
above, you may enter the number of servings you wish for the meal. For
information on setting a default, see PREFERENCES.
When you have decided on your number of servings, click OK to
continue, or CANCEL to return to the previous setting.
MEAL RECIPES
Now that your servings have been set, you may select the recipes
that you wish to include in your meal. First select Recipes from the Meal
menu to bring up the Meal Recipes dialog. From here there are a few
options as listed below:
ADD activates the Find Recipe dialog box and allows you to select a
recipe to be included in your meal. You may also add a recipe to the
meal by checking the "Include in Meal" box when creating or editing
a recipe.
VIEW will display the currently highlighted recipe on the screen
including any changes made to the ingredient quantities.
Note: If you use the Previous/Next recipe commands while displaying
a recipe with "adjusted" quantities, the recipe display will default
back to the original servings for the recipe. The meal will not be
affected, just the display.
DELETE will remove the currently highlighted recipe from the meal.
The recipe will still be in your cookbook, but will not longer be
included in the meal.
You may not abandon the changes you've made in the Meal Recipes
dialog box. Click CLOSE to exit this dialog box.
Windows Gourmet 1.1 6
SHOPPING LIST
To access the shopping list choose Shopping List from the Meal menu.
This will take you into the Shopping List dialog box. You should be
presented with a listing of the ingredients for any recipe you have
selected for your Meal. The ingredients will be adjusted to reflect the
number of servings you have selected for the Meal. The options available
in the Shopping List dialog box are listed below:
ADD puts a new item at the end of the Shopping List. The Edit
Ingredient dialog will come on the screen to enter the appropriate
information.
EDIT activates the Edit Ingredient dialog so you may change the
currently selected item.
DELETE removes the currently highlighted item from the shopping
list.
PRINT will print a list of all of the items in the shopping list to
your default printer.
RESTORE will clear the shopping list and regenerate it from the
recipes and servings selected for the Meal.
CLEAR removes all items from the shopping list.
To exit the Shopping List dialog, click on CLOSE.
